OVERVIEW

The HP StorageWorks SAN provides industry leading connectivity platforms to deploy, manage and operate today's demanding networked storage enterprise environments. It delivers the physical connectivity that, when combined with the other elements of HP's solution, brings into reality the well established benefits of network storage: significantly reducing the Total Cost of Ownerships (TCO) while maintaining high returns on investment (100-500%). Most important however, are the ways SANs impact competitive advantage by improving the business agility and capacity to react to today's business challenges.

This release of the HP StorageWorks SAN significantly increases the flexibility and agility of the fabric infrastructure, by enabling modularity in SAN deployments. This is accomplished via subnet routing technology. Modular designs significantly increase SAN scalability and ROI on storage assets by enabling more extensive device sharing and consolidation levels, without sacrificing stability and service levels.

Through the SAN island isolation provided by subnet routing, customers can share devices like arrays and tape libraries between SANs without increasing stability risks, and service levels.

Specific new capabilities include:

    • New SAN Design rules for the deployment of modular architectures with routing services
    • Introduction of the new HP StorageWorks Multi-protocol Router for the B-series. The MP Router provides three types of routing services: FC to FC subnet routing for hierarchical SAN island connectivity, FCIP tunneling for SAN extension, and iSCSI bridging (iSCSI service support will be available in late Fall 2004)
    • New edition of the SAN Design Guide documenting use cases: SAN islands consolidation, large scale SANs, FCIP SAN extension with subnet routing services, and backup consolidation (this last solution coming in the Fall 2004)

  • Enhanced Fabric Interoperability:
    • In addition to B-series/M-series & C-series/B-series fabric interoperability, this edition of the HP SAN completes the phase interoperability effort by introducing C-series/M-series fabric interoperability
    • New C-series/M-series interoperability note with respective SAN Design Rules

  • Enhanced CWDM support for SAN extension
    • The C-series CWDM solution has been extended to support B-series deployments as well
    • The solution is fully supported with Continuous Access solutions for XP
